Hardwood and concrete slabs have a complicated relationship. Concrete can hold moisture long after it looks and feels completely dry, and installing hardwood over a slab nobody has properly tested can lead to problems that show up months or even years later, well after the installation crew has moved on to other projects.
Why Moisture Testing Matters So Much
Concrete slabs release moisture vapor over time, a process that can continue for months or years depending on the age of the slab, the climate, and what sits beneath it. If installers put hardwood down before that moisture level has dropped to an acceptable range, the wood can absorb it gradually from below, leading to cupping, buckling, adhesive failure, or finish problems that have nothing to do with the quality of the hardwood itself.
This is exactly why moisture testing exists as a standard part of a proper hardwood installation over concrete. It is not a formality. It is the step that determines whether the slab is actually ready for hardwood or whether it needs additional time, a moisture barrier, or a different flooring approach altogether.
Signs Testing May Have Been Skipped
Since moisture testing happens before installation and produces no visible trace once the floor is down, the clearest signs that an installer skipped it usually show up later, in the form of the very problems the testing is meant to prevent. Cupping, where the edges of individual boards rise slightly higher than their centers, is one of the more common signs of a moisture related issue. Gaps that open unusually wide during dry seasons, or boards that feel soft or spongy in specific areas, can also point back to a moisture problem that started at the subfloor.
If any of these issues appear within the first year or two of a new hardwood installation, moisture is one of the first things worth investigating, since it is a far more common cause of early hardwood problems than the wood product itself.
What Proper Testing Actually Looks Like
A thorough moisture testing process typically involves more than a quick surface check. Calcium chloride testing or relative humidity probes inserted into the slab are two common methods that measure actual moisture emission or humidity levels within the concrete itself, rather than just the surface. These tests usually need to run for a set period of time to produce a reliable reading, which is part of why skipping or rushing this step is tempting on a tight installation timeline.
An installer who takes this step seriously will typically be able to show you the actual test results, not just tell you verbally that they checked the slab. Asking to see documented moisture readings before installation begins is a reasonable request and a good indicator of how carefully a crew is handling a project overall.
What to Do If You Suspect It Was Skipped
If you are noticing early signs of a moisture related issue in a relatively new hardwood floor, the most useful next step is having someone assess the current moisture level in the affected area directly, rather than guessing based on symptoms alone. This gives you an actual answer rather than a theory, and it clarifies whether the issue is ongoing or was a one time condition that has since resolved.
Knowing the source of the problem also determines what kind of solution actually makes sense, whether that is addressing ventilation, adding a moisture barrier before any repair, or in some cases replacing the affected boards once someone resolves the underlying moisture issue.
